He later pitched, and played first base for the "Thirty Fourth Avenue Boys" amateur club in the Queens-Nassau League, While he was playing in the amateur league, he was encouraged to concentrate on pitching by a New York Yankee scout, who later signed him to a Yankee contract. After playing three seasons in the Minors, he joined the Yankees in 1950 where he compiled a 9-1 record with a 2.81 ERA as a rookie. 1 @1992 Front Row
